QGB FACTS

DID YOU KNOW?

KILN FIRED

Living on a farm, the Queensland Gidgee Brothers understand all too well the importance of a minimised environmental footprint. While producing charcoal via a kiln (or retort) restricts output volume, the benefits far outweigh this. These include cleaner emissions, ability to capture wood vinegar, produce charcoal with higher and more consistent carbon content, zero ash being present and no need to quench with water.
Kiln fired operations also offer the ability to harness the large amounts of by-product thermal energy for other applications, in turn maximising the biomass utilisation.

ECOFRIENDLY

Charcoal making is an ancient practice with evidence of its production dating back 30,000 years.
Original techniques using pits or mounds have not changed in this time and are still widely used today. While pit production is cheap to operate, these methods are less eco-friendly than the newer kiln fired options, releasing harmful unburnt gases such as methane and leaching the bio tars and oils into the soil where they can enter the natural environment via rain and wind.

LONG BURN

The wood Acacia cambagei, better known as 'Gidgee', is endemic to Australia and has a reputation for its durability and high density, being classified as the 3rd hardest timber in the world by the Wood Data Base.
These properties, combined with QGB's kiln fired production method, make it an exceptional biomass for producing a high-quality lump charcoal with long lasting burn times.

HIGH HEAT

The amazing properties of Gidgee timber not only provide long burn times, but also allows for extremely high temperatures. When used correctly, Gidgee lump charcoal will achieve great results for both 'Hot and Fast' and 'Low and Slow' style cooks.
